Sewer gas is one of the most challenging plumbing problems because it is an invisible gas that can leak from anywhere in the sewer drain or vent system. A mixture of gases produced by the decomposition of organic matter in wastewater, it typically contains hydrogen sulfide, methane, ammonia, and carbon dioxide. Hydrogen sulfide is the most prevalent gas and the one that is responsible for the annoying rotten egg smell. At low levels, it can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat. Higher concentrations can lead to headaches, nausea, dizziness, and even unconsciousness or death. The smell of sewer gas is so annoying that it can be detrimental to the livelihood of the business.

If the drain and vent system of a commercial is very extensive, we have equipment that allows us to isolate sections of the drain and vent system to help us concentrate the smoke in a designated area. Smoke under pressure is a scientific method of locating sewer gas leaks and that is why it is so effective!  It does not really on the human nose or the human eye to locate an invisible gas!
